Smartsheet is where a lot of release plans really live. Engineering works in Jira; the PMO tracks milestones, resources and the portfolio in Smartsheet, connected by a Jira connector or by someone copying status every Friday. The two never quite agree.
This page compares Smartsheet and Jira for software release and capacity planning, and shows how Capacity Planning, Release Management, Roadmaps & Timeline brings the PMO view into Jira itself. Weighing monday.com too? Read monday.com vs Jira.
The short answer
Smartsheet is a flexible work-management platform for any kind of project. For software delivery tracked in Jira, a second system adds a sync and a lag. Capacity Planning, Release Management, Roadmaps & Timeline gives the PMO what it uses Smartsheet for — timeline, portfolio, resources, dependencies — built directly from Jira data, with forecast dates instead of manually updated ones.
Smartsheet vs Jira + the Divim app
| Smartsheet | Jira + Capacity Planning, Release Management, Roadmaps & Timeline | |

| Resource / capacity | Workload tracking on Business and above | Team throughput, WIP, PTO and holidays; overcommitment warnings |
| Portfolio | Portfolios on Enterprise; Control Center in Advanced Work Management | Portfolio tab ranks every release by forecast confidence (Advanced edition) |
| Release dates | Entered and updated in the sheet | Monte Carlo forecast from Jira throughput: P50/P85/P95 |
| Dependencies | Task predecessors in the sheet | Dependency Map and Critical Path from live Jira links |
| Price | Pro $9, Business $19 per member/month (yearly); Enterprise and Advanced Work Management custom | Free up to 10 Jira users; $30/user/year list for 11–100 users (Standard) |
Prices were read from each vendor’s public pricing page on October 10, 2026, and from the Atlassian Marketplace live pricing API the same day. Vendors change pricing; check the source before you budget.

Where Smartsheet is strong
Smartsheet handles any kind of work, not just software: budgets, approvals, construction schedules, event plans. Its grid is familiar to anyone who uses spreadsheets, and the higher tiers add portfolios and Control Center for standardised project rollout. If your portfolio is mostly non-software work, it remains a strong choice.
Where planning in Jira wins for software teams
No status copying
When the plan lives in a sheet, someone has to keep it current — by connector or by hand. When the plan is built from Jira Fix Versions, completeness and status come from the issues themselves.
Forecasts instead of hand-entered dates
In a sheet, a milestone date is a cell. In Capacity Planning, Release Management, Roadmaps & Timeline, it is a forecast: the app simulates your team’s throughput thousands of times and reports the chance of shipping by the target date (how it works). When the forecast drops below your chosen confidence, you know while there is still time to renegotiate the date.
Capacity from real data
A workload view shows what is assigned. The app’s capacity model uses what teams actually complete, minus PTO and holidays, and tells you when a release is overcommitted (details).
Executive reporting without a second tool
The Portfolio tab gives leadership portfolio confidence, on-track and at-risk counts and the next ship date across every product. Release Readiness reports publish to Confluence for go/no-go reviews (details). See also project portfolio management and why it inherits its dates.
A practical split
Many organisations keep Smartsheet for non-software programs and move software release planning into Jira. The PMO still sees software releases in a portfolio view — the one in Jira — and stops reconciling two sources for the same epics.
Try it inside your own Jira
Capacity Planning, Release Management, Roadmaps & Timeline installs from the Atlassian Marketplace in a few clicks and comes with Atlassian’s standard 30-day trial. It runs on Atlassian Forge (Runs on Atlassian, Cloud Fortified), so your Jira data never leaves Atlassian’s cloud. Start with the user guide, or see the full Atlassian-only planning stack.
